View Full Version : Had to reinstall OS
Lynn
February 4th 04, 11:41 AM
Unfortunately after all my problems I had to re-install the OS using the
Toshiba System recover discs. Happy to say it all seemed to go well. Am I
right in presuming that I am automatically classed as Administrator. When I
asked who would be using the machine I only inputted my name.
I am only asking as I have been trying to install Officed 2000 which I used
to have on my Desktop. It says it has installed correctly but Word only has
Custom in the drop down list of Page Setup so was wondering if I had done
something wrong when installing OS

Hi Wesley
I do have all those tabs but under Paper Size there is only Custom listed.
I think I may have sussed out that the sizes comes from the Printer and I
don't have one installed on my laptop yet. I have looked at the Printer Port
settings - Driver and it says Driver 5.1..2600.00
I have looked as you suggested and is does say I am Computer Administrator
so at least that is right.
Perhaps you can also answer me something else as well if you don't mind.
When I went in System - Computer Name is says your- then some numbers and
letters. I think that perhaps when I first turned on the laptop after
re-installation I should have typed something in there. Didn't have to do
that when laptop was delivered pre-installed as the supplier had set
everything up and it said TOSHIBAPC. My name wasn't showing etc it just said
Admin. I wasn't sure what I was putting where under the Registered to it
just says Lynn rather than my full name as well.
Thanks for all your help.

Lynn;
Paper Size tab | Click the V to see more.
[[Click one of the paper sizes supported by your printer, or click Custom
size and then enter the paper size dimensions in the Width and Height
boxes.]]
No printer installed probably explains the Paper Size issue.
No printer/no paper/no size.
Don't worry about it 'til you install a printer. :o)

[[To rename a computer
Open System in Control Panel.
On the Computer Name tab, click Change.
Under Computer name, type a new name for the computer, and then click OK.
Note
To open System, click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and
then double-click System.]]

Install adds random numbers/letters after the computer name so that there is
less chance that 2 computers will have the same name. Remember, on a
corporate LAN of 30,000 computers, there may be 50 Lynn's!

So I take it there wouldn't be a problem if I renamed it.

Lynn;
To see if you are an Administrator.
Start | Run | Type: control userpasswords | OK
Does it say: "Computer administrator" below your name?
Start | Run | Type: control userpasswords | OK
Next to your name, under Group, Administrators?
------------
Word | File | Page Setup
You should see>>>
Margins | Paper Size | Paper Source | Layout

Hope this helps. Let us know.
