I'm really new to XP, a freind of mine has it, i'm still running 98. When i
do msconfig and uncheck programs in start-up, (by the way, everything is
running) and reboot, they all come back? Am i suppose to disable systems
restore, uncheck running programs, reboot, then enable systems restore?
Second question is, what should remain running in startup beside's
antivirus, soundmixer, so on? I know on 98 what has to run, systemstray,
explorer, etc. XP is totally different? Thanks for your time!

For the programs that you unchecked in "MSCONFIG", but return after =
reboot. You should open these programs, go to their "TOOLS" or "OPTIONS" =
tab, and disable their "start when Windows start" (or words to that =
effect) feature.

Check out each startup item that you want to disable at
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.htm - there are usually
comments about how to disable an item or links to web sites with that
information.

Good luck
