My old HP Vectra runs W98, has only serial and parallel
ports, has Ethernet card for hi-speed cable modem, cdrom
drive. My new computer is a Toshiba 5205-S503, has only
USB2 ports, has Ethernet card. I'd like to move about 100
Mb of files from the old to the new computer. Is there
any way to connect the two? I'd like to avoid sending the
files by e-mail or buying a cd rw drive for the old
computer. Can I connect them via the fat phone-type jack
for the Ethernet cards? If so, how? Step-by-step would
be appreciated. Thanks!

100MB is not that much to spend much time or money on.
There many possibilites like Direct Cable Connection via serial or
parallel ports.
Easiest is to use some USB memory device or special USB cable between
the USB ports that is designed for the job you like to do.
Or you could make a network between the two computers.
