can't copy to cd

I have been having trouble copying files, not music, to a cd. It tells me
there is no disk in the drive, or that it is a read only file. Lots of
weird comments. I reinstalled roxio as suggested by dell but it still gives
the same errors.
What do you think the problem is?
I had the blaster virus, I cleared it out with sysclean. I don't have the
hot fix installed that was supposed to be the problem so I am stuck not
being able to save to the cd.
