Is there any way to get xp to recognize the programs
already installed on the computer. Way way back in the
windows 3.1 program manager there was a function that
would have the program manager search for programs. Is
that still buried in xp somewhere? So far I have been
reinstalling the same programs, but they end up going in
the same place they were anyway, the only difference
seems to be that xp can see them now. Is there a shortcut
for this somewhere?

Windows 3.1 didn't use the Registry which is where programs installed on
your computer are registered. You are just going to have to add them to the
start menu and add/remove programs list manually.
