View Full Version : Hard Drive Error or otherwise?

Is this a symptom of errors on the hard disk? Programs
are not always responding:

The Scanner and Camera Wizard, for example:

instead of the S/C Wizard coming up immediately, a window
appears saying 'reading picture information'. If I leave
it and take no action, it takes about 11 minutes until
the S/C Wizard comes up, then upon previewing an image it
takes another age (5-10 mins) doing its' 'Waiting On
Scanner' bit.
If I click on 'cancel' when it is 'reading picture
information' it says 'wait' - nothing happens, and it
goes on until the wizard appears, as above. If I click on
the close button (top r/h corner) again, nothing happens.
If I start Task Manager, (in Processes, it is highlighted
as 'msmsgs.exe') and try to close it that way, it eithers
says that the program is not responding, or it closes and
says that there is an error with the Windows Picture and
Acquisition Wizard and an error report needs to be sent
to Microsoft, which I did do on one occasion.
(Sometimes when I click cancel, it says that the S/C
Wizard is in use - please try again later. It isn't in
use according to the Task manager).
The error log recorded the event (on the most recent
occasion) thus:
Source: Application Hang
Error: Hanging Application wiaacmg.exe version
5.1.2600.0 hang module hungappversion 0.0.0.0. hang
address 0x 00000000

Other errors listed include:
Service Control Manager (the first that I could see
listed and frequently so!); Application Errors;
Application Hang; DR Watson; DCOM, etc and the log
mentions things like fault buckets, or the Windows
Acquisition Wizard.

Other problems with programs are as follows:

Search Assistant: click on the Help and Support option
and nothing happens.

Dial up connection (to Internet) pops up without
prompting, and doesn't always pop up when required.

Click on Start - My Computer - in the right hand pane
where the details are, there is only a torch like object
scanning a folder; this sometimes happens when trying to
access the control panel also - details do not come up,
or take minutes to do so.

Start - All Programs - Accessories - Windows Explorer -
Click on My Computer ( in the left hand pane) and
then 'C' local disk, to bring down a drop down list by
clicking on the + symbol - nothing happens.

The strange thing is that either all these programs are
working ok, or if one os playing up, they all do, and it
seems to be worse following a restart.
I would really appreciate some feedback on this one.
Thanks.
