When I click on "My Computer" I get the normal screen
listing all drives. When I click on Local Drive /C I get
the following message:
"Windows cannot find Air.exe. This program is needed for
opening file of filetype "File".
Where did this problem come from and what can I do to
eradicate it?

im afraid that it is more than likely that your pc is infected with a virus.
first, update your antivirus software and run a full system scan. if you do
not have antivirus software, then you can download a demo of nav2003 here:
http://nct.symantecstore.com/fulfill/0001.69#nav. it is entirely possible
that nav will not work properly because the machine is already infected, but
try installing anyway. if you are able to install nav, run the scan and
identify the virus, then go here to obtain the removal tool: www.sarc.com.
if that does not work, then you will have to manually remove these entries
from the registry, which can render your computer unusable, so try this
first.

Go to Start/Search and search for the file 'autorun.inf ' if one is
found on the root of C:\, right click the file and select Delete.
