View Full Version : Help with "My Computer" Appearance Change - Please

To all,
Very new to XP - I am running XP Pro on a Thinkpad. I recently
installed the XP Software and Drivers for an HP All in One Printer.
When the install completed, it had added the HP to the My Computer
folder. The folder appearance is now changed though from the default
appearance I had prior to the installation. Before the install, the
items in the My Computer folder were seperated by a line (with some text
I think), somewhat like the Groups view, but it was a more distinct
breakout of the items. The closest I can get back to it is the groups
view which breaks things alphabetically, with a letter to indicate the
items in the group, but this wasn't the appearance before the install.
Any help in getting that original appearance back? Thanks!!
Jay S.

Right click anywhere in a blank area of that pane, choose "Arrange Icons =
By", then make sure you have "Show In Groups" checked, and then have the =
bullet set next to "type" instead of "name" (which places the alphabet =
with to the corresponding groups.

Jon,
Well, you win the prize for being the closest! ;-) That's very
similar, but the seperator lines were thicker (like an 1/8 inch). How
thick are the lines when you have it set up like this? This is really a
nit, but trying to understand how to get it back, helps get into what
things do and don't do... As I said, if this turns out to be my
biggest problem, I'll be happy! It is annoying though that once again,
HP messes something up... Have seen it before with other HP software
installs. If you have any other thoughts, I'd appreciate.. Thanks again!..

Hi Jay,
My lines are not that thick, in fact, they look like this
http://home.insightbb.com/~guesswho192/My_Com.JPG
Jay, you can (after doing the "Arrange Icons By") choose at the top, "view" then whatever you want from "Thumbnails" down to "Details" in the drop down selection to get what you want.

Open up "My Computer"
Right click on an open space
Choose "View" - "Icons"
Then......
Right click on an open space

Jon,
Thanks. That's what it is here. Funny how I remember it being
different before the HP install.... Also checked a friend's machine,
and his had the "thicker" lines. Perhaps some hidden setting somewhere
as to "line thickness". Yes, I was aware of the Drop Down. Again
thanks for your help, Jon...

You're Wlcome Jay :-),
If you somehow find a setting or registry fix/hack that places the look back the way you want it, please post it back, I reference these into folders. In the meantime, it sounds as if you otherwise have a fine running machine.

Have you clicked on 'view' and tried the various settings?
