View Full Version : Cd-rw(32x) will only write at one speed(about 8X)

My Lite-on 32x drive was cranking out CD's in around 3 min in win 2000.
Since I installed XP, it will only write at 8x...even though it's reading
3X reading speed...I even tried burning at a slower speed for an audio
disk..no luck..
Where do i start to trouble shoot this? I've installed whatever drivers I
downloaded from Lite-on(Cendyne)..This behavior happens no matter which
burning prog I use(Nero, Alcohol,Windows Burning Wizard, etc).
They reading speed is also slower than my DVD drive, which is marked
slower..What to do?
Thanks
Waldo

Go into device manager and see if the device is running in DMA mode. If not,
you'll have to delete the controller from dev man and allow it to redetect.
The safest way to do this is to do the delete in safe mode and allow the
reinstall on the subsequent reboot into normal mode.

I did this and there is no speed increase..I am stuck at 6x-8x, even though
the writer is set for 32X...
Could it be possible that my hard drive is not feeding the data fast
enough?
Thanks ,
Waldo.

If your HD was not feeding the data fast enough you would likely be getting
buffer underruns.

This could be a media issue. Have you tried a different brand of media and
insured that it supports 32x burn speed?

are you sure the cd itself is compatable? check its speed.

Check in Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager
Look in IDE ATA/ATAPI disk controllers for the channel the drive is on
(Primary/Secondary). double click and look on the Advanced page. You
need it set on 'Use DMA if available. If, after a reboot, it says the
drive is in PIO mode then highlight the master controller, above Primary
and Action - Uninstall, and shutdown. Check cabling and start up again
for PnP to try again. If the drivers get frequent errors they fall back
to a slower mode, and stick there

I tried all the suggestions offered and still no go. I recently installed a
48X CDR/W to see if that would help.. No luck.It also burns at the same
speed as the Lite-on - 6-8X. All the different pieces of SW show that the
drive is burning at 32X, however, the reality is that it's not doing that.
I also tried installing chip-set drivers(Via)to no avail....
Could the culprit possibly be a program that I have installed...
I am at a total loss as to what the problem is.....
It's really strange...
Thanks,
Waldo

Waldo, check the specs on your CDR/W. Is that 48X (and 32X) for reading or
writing?

Get CDROM Tool I don't like the newest version however it should do what you
want if it supports your drive.
I use the old version because the new version does not support my drive.
I use it all the time to slow my CD-RW down not speed it up.
You also need to make sure you have new ASPI drivers installed.
At 40X this Yamaha sounds like a turbo prop jet engine and insists on
running at the highest speed it can even while playing Music CD's so I slow
the drive down to eliminate the noise.
I also use it to slow the drive down to eliminate ASPI errors when ripping.
When burning I usually try to do so at 12X to 16X or I get buffer underruns
however this would depend on the speed of your machine and bus etc.

Sharon,
I now have two burners.. My original was burning CD's in 2-3 minutes...They
now take 10 mins.. That machine had a 32x burn rating.I got a deal on a 48X
burn rating drive and installed it...It also burns at about 8X..So, I have
two different burners from different companies, one of which was working
well. Now, neither of them goes higher than 8X burning...
Any ideas?

Hi All,
I maybe wrong here, but I think the speed of CD burning is governed by 2
factors - the burner and the media. Your drive may be rated at 48x, but if
the media is only rated at16x (for example) you will only burn at 16x. Try
different media manufacturers eg TDK Gold - they will burn at 48x if the
burner allows it.
Regards Ron H.

Waldo,
What mode does Device Manager show in the burner's properties and in the
controller's properties? I think Alex Nichol asked you this before. It could
be worth checking. If you're stuck in PIO mode, that would explain some of
the slowness.

Aside: I was copying some CDs last month (music by a friend's band) from one
burner to the other. Got a message that speed was being limited by the
throughput of one device. Since both devices were new and decently rated, I
was surprised. I closed a few programs to give the burning app full rein and
got better results (16x).

At this point i would be ecstatic with 16X. :-)
I checked the DMA/PIO and it is set at "DMA if available".
I shut off everything I can...
My media is rated at 48x, although I would be happy with even a 16x
result...
The thing is that when I was running win2000, the drive was knocking out
CD's in 2-3 min...with the same media I'm using now..
Suddenly, it's down to 6-8X...I know it's not a hardware problem(it's
happening with both drives)
It's not a burning-software problem because it happens with all the
programs i use.(Nero, Alcohol120%, etc)
I have the latest ASPI layer installed (Adaptec).
I have a feeling that there is a piece of software in there that is
affecting the drives...
I will continue to hunt this down...and let you all know if i solve it
Meanwhile, any and all suggestions will be appreciated
Thanks,
Waldo
BTW, I just put in another 256M ram, thinking this might help...no dice

Well, I guess PIO mode would have made working out this problem too easy,
eh? <g> Do you have the IMAPI service (XP's cd burning) sticking its nose
into Nero's business? While this can run fine alongside many burning apps, I
always disable that service. I also use TweakUI for XP to disable autoplay
(another nuisance when you don't want or need it starting up at the most
inconvenient moments).

Just read a note from a friend who was complaining about slow burning on a
system that usually doesn't have this problem. He disabled ZoneAlarm and the
speed returned. That's a new one to me but thought it might be helpful to
you since you've tried just about everything else. Also, check if Nero is
configured to check for song information online. May want to try turning
that off while burning too.

What is size of cpu? Bus Speed? Do you have Ultra 133 Ide Cable? Are you
ATA100/66/33?
I have Amd 2400 processor. Bus speed 333. Motherboard supports
ATA133/100/66/33. I have Ultra 133 Ide cable.
Burner is Master on Secondary Ide. Hard drive is on Master Primary. This
will give max performance. I actually burn at max 48X.

What brand media, your burner will scan or test and reduce
speed to fit the quality of the media.

Duh! There is a difference between writing and burning in that writing is
usually associated with CDRW which is a lot slower then burning.

I'm using the same media and hardware I was using when I had Win2000
installed. Nothing has changed except the OS. I have since tried two more
drives, one 48X and one 52X. They all burn at the same speed (about 8X,
though they SAY they are burning at whatever maximum speed of the drive....
I'm not gonna worry too much more about this as I will soon put together a
more up-to date system...Don't know if i will use XP or Win 2000...
thanks,
