have Dell 4550, winxp, 512 ram. When I start my unit within 30 sec my
desktop comes on ok however I can only open sol but that is all. Noton
takes about 3 min to load and until then I cannot connect my dsl. I am
getting pretty good at sol but need to know how to shorten the 3 min.
thanking you Jim Johnston

The more applications you have launching at startup, the longer it's going
to take.
You could try going into msconfig and disabling applications that are
launching at startup that you don't need.
You may also want to consider using hibernate or standby mode instead of
shutting down entirely, so you don't have to go through this wait each time.

It's your local area connection negotiating for an IP address. You can speed
it up by assigning the following IP # 192.168.1.1 and subnet mask
255.255.255.0

Jim
Look at services very carefully!
Check the setting for Windows Image Acquisition (WIA). If you have this =
set at Automatic a change to Disabled may give more immediate control to =
you after the icons on the Desktop have finished loading. WIA is a =
service used for some scanners and cameras so keep an eye on these =
devices. This worked for me.
How to access and change services settings:
Click Start, and then click Run.
Type Services.msc and then click OK. The Services window appears.
Locate and select the service that you want to change.
Click Action, and then click Properties.
On the General tab, click the drop-down for the "Start up type" list box =
and change the start up for WIA as needed.=20
Click OK when finished making your changes.
