View Full Version : Weird XP modem - long & horny :))

Hi all!
I asked italian newsgroups for advice and sent an e-mail
to Digicom, but didn't get any answer, so I hope someone
out there can help me.
This is the problem ( no Hamlet but Digicom Botticelli modem):
I have this external 56K modem on Com1. On a cold start the
modem is detected as PnP Lucent and assigned to Com1. It
works fine. But if I reboot (warm start) the properties windows
says "not present". To have it work again I must switch it off and
then on again. Why?
I thought it could be the driver. Actually if I want to install
the drivers in the CD or the ones I got from Digicom site
XP says that there is no better driver. I can force the installation,
but the problem remains.
Problem #2:
When I set up the account for my provider and then connect
everything works fine. When I connect again I get an error
due to incorrect password. In fact, checking the connection
properties, the password field is filled with many dots,
twice the length of my password - looks like the password
is doubled. So I have to erase the field or modify the password
in the connection window, but the problem remains.
Any hint?
Thank you all in advance

Modem is OK. Works fine with WinME and Linux in the same port Com1.

Actually I don't type the password. I did check the remember checkbox.
By the way, in what files are the passwords?

For Problem #1, your modem may be bad. Can you uninstall and try with a
different external modem? Hopefully there is nothing wrong with your
motherboard's serial port. Another thing to check is if the modem
offers more than one way to connect, try connecting with the different
port.

For Problem #2 - The number of asterisks you see in the password field
is unrelated to the number of letters in the real password. It is a
security feature designed to help keep someone from guess your
password. If you are quite sure you are typing in the correct password
and then it isn't accepted by your ISP (right after it *was* accepted),
I can only guess that somehow it isn't being transmitted correctly.
So try a different modem (uninstall the first one) and see if that
helps. If it doesn't, then please repost and this time include the name
of your ISP and any more details you think will help.

They are encripted. I have no idea where they are. It doesn't matter,
because you can't read them anyway.

So what is the problem, then? Just install the 56k driver. I really
don't understand what this is all about. Since we still don't know what
ISP you are using or have a clear idea of the entire situation, I'm
sorry but I don't have any more information for you. Maybe someone else
will jump into the thread with an answer for you.

Actually I don't type the password. I did check the remember checkbox.
By the way, in what files are the passwords?

If I install a general 56K driver the modem works. So, what is it?
Thanks for your help

Modem is OK. Works fine with WinME and Linux in the same port Com1.

Hi,
This is by design. However, a workaround is to scan for hardware changes
via the Device Manager.
More information:
At boot time the serial ports are scanned, which is when the external modem
is detected.
Once the machine has booted the serial ports are not scanned automatically.

The problem is I want to ** know ** why the other driver does not work.
As for problem # 2 I found a workaround:
I did create a new connection, and when asked for the password
I left it blank. Then I doubleclicked the newly created connection and did
write the password. Now everything works fine!
But I still don't understand ** the cause ** of the mulfunctioning.

So why the generic driver is recognized and assigned to COM1?
I think the modem is not in the compatibility list of XP and
the driver signature is not accepted. So at start up it uses the
PnP driver by Microsoft, but when I reboot, the modem is
detected, but no suitable driver is found, so it is not assigned to COM1.
I switch off and on, then use the device manager to install
new hardware. It says there is no new hardware. I close the
window of the device manager and WOW! There it is!
Kind of strange!
