upgrade

I recently installed Norton anti virus. After
Installation I lost win.com. To rectify the problem I
went to all the troubleshooting guides and am now able to
get back to my windows 98 after going through step by step
upload. I want to install XP, hopefully to get the
operating system working. When I attempt do intall it
hangs up and then my system shuts down and I have strange
verticle lines on my screen and my computer is locked up.
I desparately need my system to work. Please give me some
assistance.
