floppy disk recognition

When we try to save to the a: drive (floppy disk) a
message says it does not recognize the disk media. It
then asks if we want to format the disk. A yes answer
still says that it cannot complete the formatting. We
are unable to access or save to our floppy disks. SOME
disks do actually work, but the majority of them we
cannot read.
We have gone in and looked at the device and the drivers -
- everything is saying that it is working properly.
Also tried to setup a shortcut to the drive -- but then
it says that it is not a valid shortcut and requests that
it be deleted.

Are you using 1.44MB disks?
