Video Resolution - Desktop larger than screen

I think this is a pretty basic issue. I've had it before on older OS's but
for the life of me I can't find the fix.

I've got a 17" monitor. I set the resolution to 1280x1024 (like my other
PC's) but instead of a nice tight screen, I get this desktop I have to chase
around the monitor.

I don't want the desktop that big, I want that much info compressed onto my
screen.

ATI Wonder Card (Radeon 7500)
17" Mitsubishi CRT
XP Pro
