I messed up my user accounts to such an extent that now I
can't get any of them to pop up to ask for my password.
ow I can't log on or off nor can I get the "switch user"
symbol.
When I try to shut down the computer, it doesn't respond.
I've had to put it on the suspend mode overnight.
When I click on Log Off, I get no response. Why?
(The accounts are listed in the control panel/user
accounts section.)
Is "limited" account the same as "administrator account?"
This Windows xp profession is wonderful but too complex
for an idiot like me.

Limited accounts are just what the name applies - they are limited as
to what they can and cannot do.
Administrator accounts have full privileges and access anything and
run any programs.
Try creating a new Admininstrator account and do not configure or
change it in any way. Then try deleting all repeat all of the other
user accounts.
Good luck

Then revert to Windows 98, Windows 95, or maybe even Windows 3.1.

Why mess with something if you don't know what you are doing?
maybe the best solution is to backup all your data and do a disk format
and clean install.

Buy the BIG book, XP for Dummies. The 25 Dollar one, and you'll be
surprised at how much you learn. Oh yes, read it.
