Windows XP Professional Error message: Windows could not
start because the following file is missing or
corrupted. windows\system32\config\system.
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows
Setup using the original cd-rom. Select 'r' at the first
screen to start repair.
When attempting to do this it proceeds to Windows XP
Professional Setup.
When selecting 'R' as suggested for Repair ...a nscreen
appears showing Microsoft Windows SP (TM) Recovery
CDonsole. The RC provides system rpeair and recovery
functionaqlity. Type EXIT to quitn and restart the
computer.

1: C:\Windows

Which Window installation would you like to log onto
(To cancel, press Enter)?

I'm don't know what to type here ? I attempted to type
repair and it tells me to type help but this doesn't show
any repair files. Can someone help me figure out what to
do from here please. I'm at an impass. I appreciate any
suggestions, thank you. Ronda Setser

You need to run a number of commands from the prompt.

Ronda,
here is the exact sequence that I see when I boot from the XP Home or Pro
CD (as written in response to a similar post). (Some people have reported
that they do not see that final repair option. You are choosing R too early
in the sequence.)
****
OK. Here is the exact set of things that happen when I boot XP Pro from the
MS CD. (Set first boot device to CDROM in BIOS...)

Black screen. Message in bottom 'task bar' (TB) 'Examining hardware'. Just
a few seconds.

Blue screen. 'Windows setup'. (TB shows all the possible hard- and
soft-ware drivers being loaded. Takes a couple of minutes.)

Blue screen. 'Starting Windows'. Takes a couple of minutes.
All blue screens from now on.
'Welcome to setup'.
- to setup XP press 'enter'.
- to repair using XP Repair console press R.
(TB: F3 to exit)

[[[Ronda, you do not need the repair console.]]]

I pressed enter.

Licence agreement.
(TB: to accept F8. I didn't note the decline or quit keys.)

I pressed F8.

'XP Pro setup'
(My current installation of 'Microsoft Windows XP Pro' highlighted.)
- to repair press R
- to install a fresh copy press esc
(TB: F3 to quit)

I pressed F3 at this point.

To repair, press R.

Ronda,

I hope the MS Knowledgebase solution works. I had the same fault on my two
home Pcs almost simultaneously and I wondered if a virus (W32) may have
caused the problem. I had to reload XP from scratch.
