Fonts not showing

Whenever I install a new font, the font shows in the
correct folder (c:\windows\fonts\), when I double click
on them, they get shown correctly by the built in font
viewer, however, when I try to use them in applications
they are not recognised (i.e. they don't show up in the
Fonts list of e.g. Microsoft Word and other programs).
I am talking about .TTF fonts, and I use Win XP Home.
Has anyone experienced something similar?

Frank, how are you installing the fonts?
Be sure to use File> Install New Font from the menu.
In the options that appear, select whether just a shortcut should be added
to Windows\Fonts or if the font file should be copied there. If you select
the shortcut option, do not move the original file.

Example: I keep a folder on D: called Extra Fonts. I place the new TTF file
into that folder and select the shortcut option in Install New Font. If the
font is to be available, the TTF file has to stay in the Extra Fonts file
folder.

Also, is there a printer installed on this system and has it been
designated as the default printer? If there is no printer, try installing
the "Generic Text Printer" to the Printer and Fax Folder. If Generic Text
Printer is the only "printer" on the system, designate it as the default.

The funny thing is, I DO NOT have the install option in
any of my menu points in the font folder.
Would there be a corruption in my OS (Win XP HOME)?

Sharon.

For Word to use installed True Type fonts a default printer must be
installed and the default printer must support True Type fonts. The Generic
Text Printer does not support True Type fonts.

There's the root of your problem. Windows\Fonts is one of those "magic"
folders similar to Recycle Bin. Instead of behaving as a normal
straightforward folder there are extra features and functions tied to it.
When the folder loses its system attributes, it fails to provide those
extra features.

A few different ways to fix this. Pick whichever one you're most
comfortable with (my favorite is method 2):

Method 1)
While logged on to an account in the administrator group, open a Command
Prompt window. Type the following command:
attrib +s c:\windows\fonts
Press Enter. You may need to log off and then log on again for the folder
to be loaded as and recognized as a system folder.

Method 2)
Install TweakUI for XP (must have XP with Service Pack 1) and then use its
Repair menus to repair the Fonts folder.

Method 3) [courtesy of MVP Kelly Theriot]
A font may seem to be installed correctly but does not appear in the Fonts
folder because the Fonts key in the registry is missing or damaged. Move
the contents of the Fonts folder to an empty folder. By opening the Fonts
folder, select all the fonts, copy them, and paste them to a new folder.
Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts.
Highlight the key and press DELETE. Once the key has been deleted create a
new key to replace it, by selecting Edit/New/Key and name the new
key [Fonts].

Restart the computer, then re-install the fonts by opening the Control
Panel, double-click on 'Fonts'. And from the File menu select 'Install New
Fonts...' adding the fonts that were previously copied to the temporary
directory.

PS. I mis-stated yesterday about the Generic Text Only printer. The
requirement is a printer capable of printing TrueType Fonts. Even if you
don't use the printer, having it installed has been known to make
previously unavailable fonts appear as choices within your programs. This
is documented in the MS Knowledge Base.
