I am trying to install some technical software on my xp
home edition. When I try to install I get a pop-up
saying service pack 4 is required for windows nt 4.0. Is
there anything I can do to make this work on my computer.

Check with the authors of the program. Windows XP Home uses an
internal version number of Windows NT 5.1 and the application may not
recognize this as valid.

You should be able to run this program by using compatibility mode.
Create a desktop shortcut to launch the program.
Right-click on the shortcut and select Properties.
Click on the compatibility tab.
Select the checkbox for "Run this program in compatibility mode..."
and then select Windows NT 4.0 (Service Pack 5) from the drop-down
menu.
Click on Apply and OK as needed to exit.

Good luck
