From Word 2002 Help on Autorecovery and Backup................

Microsoft Word includes a number of ways to back up and recover your
documents.

Document recovery and AutoRecover

If a Microsoft Office program encounters a problem and stops responding, you
can close the program in a controlled manner. The files you were working on
are analyzed for errors, and information in them is recovered if possible. In
some cases, however, no information can be recovered.

The Document Recovery task pane lists all the files that were recovered when
the program stopped responding.

End Help******************

I believe Word 97 and 2000 have the same features.

You may have a backup you don't know about. Hope so.

I cannot believe there are still people who've not learnt to CTRL+S as they
go along. You're typing, it's the easiest thing in the world just to hit
CTRL+S occasionally, then you wouldn't find yourself in this mess. I also
have autosave set for every couple of minutes - that way, should anything
happen, the worst thing that could happen is I've lost the last couple of
sentences.

Adopt a strategy of saving at least once a paragraph and you'll never have
this problem again. You may be lucky that autosave was set and you're able
to recover some of your paper. If not, let this be a lesson to adopt a good
save routine.

You told Bruce Chambers he was wrong...of course I criticised you! Bruce is
a burgeoning MVP - you're not and with remarks like those you made, it isn't
very difficult to see why!

No, you criticized me because I commented on someone else - not Bruce.
Nice try.
