Outlook Slow

Sometimes it takes forever to switch from one email
message to another in Outlook. I have a 2.8 Ghz machine
with 756 Meg of Ram so it should be fast. Sometimes it
works fine but other times you click on one item and it
takes forever for the next one to show up. I use the
preview pane like I always have to help sort through the
junk to find real email. Do I have some setting wrong or
how can I speed it up?

Whenever my Outlook gets slow like this, I do some cleaning: Archive or
delete old emails, empty the trash and compact the PST file.
