dire straits

I have a fault with my maxtor hard drive, and on boot up it tells me a
failure is imminent.
So for now I have just been carrying on wth boot up by pressing the F1 key
which then gives me the option to boot from my XP home recovery CD which is
not a full version of Windows XP Home instilation CD,Instead it gives me the
option to (repair)or(set up windows)or (quit).
So I (quit) wich takes me to my Desktop.

Unfortunately my other half booted up and (set up windows)
instead of (quitting).
Now I have two installations on my PC hogging a load of disk space and both
of them fresh installs,I thought one would be fresh and the other still the
same as I have had it running before, but it hasn't??
Adding insult to injury I couldn't get my files and settings CD back-up to
install from said program but I did get my settings loaded, then i dragged
my modem driver from CD and installed that so I could post this Question,and
guess what! I got the dreaded RPC MBlast worm.
Luckilly I had a back-up of the patch to fix it.

1..Is there a way of deleting one of the XP Home installs

2..Is there a way of finding my original install of XP Home

3..Is there a chance that I will wake up and this will all be just a
horrible dream.

4..Should I wipe my whole hard drive ( which is failing by the way) and
install XP Home from recovery CD, or do I need to buy the individual XP Home
CD to do this?

5..Should I kill my other half and spend less time in jail than it would
trying to fix this problem.

6..Can't think of anything else for now, but I'm sure I've left something
out! Tee Hee!!

Well i'm afraid money is one of the main factors,
but if I could just get back to where I was before It would do 'till I got
some dosh.
I'm still hoping for a bit more help on this one thanks.

PMc,
You know that your hard drive is failing - it will not continue for much
longer (it may, but certainly don't count on it) so my course of action
would be to:
Replace hard drive with new one. Perform a clean install with XP
Insert old hard drive as a slave drive - preferably on the CD IDE channel if
possible for transfer speed reasons.
Use Win Explorer to transfer data files from old to new drive.
Reinstall programs and applications on new drive.
OR
Insert new drive as a slave drive and buying/using a disc imaging program
(Norton Ghost for example but there are lots of others) to transfer your
existing installation to the new drive.
Once imaged, the new disc should be placed on the existing 'C' drive cable,
and you can decide if you want to trust your old disc for storage as a 'D'
drive or bin it.
I'm not sure, but you may be able to distinguish the XP versions by the file
date created/modified entry in properties- hopefully some one will chip in
with an elegant way to delete the extra OS painlessly.

PMc,
Further to my previous post - I forgot to suggest running Check Disk on the
drive.
(Right click the drive, select 'properties>tools>error checking -check now>
select scan for/attempt recovery of bad sectors>start.
But personally, I'd seriously heed the HDD warning if there's data you don't
want to lose.

You've got a bigger problem that just having a second copy of Windows on
your hard drive. As the warning to you said, your hard drive is in danger
of failing. When you hard drive quits, your computer won't be very useful
at all no matter how little or much money you have.
