View Full Version : New HDD not detected in WinXP?

Built a new system with Western Digital WD1200JB. Detected properly in POST
and BIOS but WinXP Pro Setup tells me there's no HDD installed! Have
registered with WD Support but when I try to download Data Lifeguard Tools
am told "you don't have permission to access this page". M/B is Asus A7N8X
with Athlon 2500XP. Should I try partitioning first with a Win98 boot
floppy?

After searching WD site I now know that it must be partitioned with Data
Lifeguard Tools but the site won't let me download it!

Deals with Seagate drives, but info the same for WD....

Do *not* let 98 any where near a drive of this size. 98/SE disk tools break
around 64G and even patched max out at 128G.

Just use the disk manager snap in. Start->run->diskmgmt.msc. Right click the
new drive and follow the prompts.

The latest Data Lifeguard is here:

http://support.wdc.com/download/#dlgtools

I can get to the file and Western Digital doesn't know me from Adam's house cat,
so there's no reason at WD why it wouldn't be available to you.

If Data Lifeguard doesn't set everything so XP install will recognize your HD,
you can still use the XP CD to partition and format. Boot from the CD and enter
R to get the Recovery Console. The partition command is diskpart instead
of the DOS fdisk. Enter diskpart /? to get instructions on use and applicable
switches. Once the disk is partitioned, you can format from Recovery Console or
at the start of XP installation, which should then "see" your new HD.

HTH!

Thanks for the replies. Managed to get into XP Setup but it would not let
me partition, only format all 120GB as NTFS and installed XP. After reboot
"non system disk" error. Downloaded Data Lifeguard and ran diagnostics .No
drive errors but CHS figures in that do not match those in BIOS. Can't
manually enter CHS figures either! The Cylinders setting in BIOS only
allows me to put in a 5 figure number but the actual number is 6 figures!
Seems to be a BIOS problem with such a large HDD. Will check Asus site for
BIOS update.
