View Full Version : Format disk with bad a sector

I post this question again, and ask do not give general advices, especially
such as "Buy new PC or disk", and do not refer to sites which have no
answers to this question.
1. HDD has a bad sector, and nor w2k, nor WinXP cannot format this disk.
Win98 format.com blocks bad sector and formats partition, but only in FAT
16k. Win2K and WinXP formats try to recover bad sector, doing it during 5-10
minutes, next turn off screen and continue 5-10 minutes, and next very
quickly (no opportunity to stop and read) display blue screen and reboot PC
leaving disk unformatted (doing this both in CD installation and formatting
other partition from active w2k or WinXP-pro, again both to NTFS or FAT).
w2k or WinXP-pro format.com have no option to block bad sector. What to do??
2. I looked through all helps and Supporting Tolls in w2k, WinXP home and
pro., and win2003Server, and still cannot find how in unattended mode (or
active CD installation) to force disk format with non default cluster size,
e.g., I want to use one partition and format it with 2k (small disk) from CD
installation.
I tried pointed below section, but [DiskConfig] section does not work in
unattended.sif or unattended.txt files.
[DiskConfig]
Disk0 = Disk0.Config
[Disk0.Config]
VolumeLabel1=C_NTFS_2048
ForceFormat1 = Yes
FileSystem1 = NTFS
Clustersize1 = 2048
Compression1 = Yes
SetActive1 = Yes
PartitionType1 = Primary
=========
Do you have any idea how to format disk with bad sectors to NTFS, especially
with not default cluster size from CD installation.

Sorry for the general advice, but if the hard drive is defective to the
point where you can't work with it, it should be replaced. Even if it could
be patched - would you ever trust it again?
I wouldn't.

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:
1. Open your BIOS and set your CD Drive as the first bootable device.
2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your =
computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete the =
existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the =
primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.
5. Windows XP Clean Install:=20

Hard drive manufacturers provide software to perform maintenance on their
drives. Go to the appropriate web site and download their maintenance
programs.

I said that I posted again, and on the same as yours advice, MSVP said that
almost all HDD have defects, but manufactures simply hide they from you. My
disk was with this one bad sector the beginning, and I have no problems,
except with formatting from XP.

But you can't even work with yours. You have a somewhat serious defect! You
have been working with this problem for what, 10 days now. Don't you think
it's time you get on with it? Drives "DO" go bad, you know, to the point
where they can't be recovered. It's just up to you to decide when you have
reached the point where you accept that fact!

There's a program called spinrite that might recover that disk for you. Of
course, if this is the only time you're going to use it, it might not be
very cost effective.
And depending on how severe the problem is, this might not fix it, either.

Sorry, I missed a word, and wanted to say that: "My disk was with this one
bad sector from the beginning, and I had no problems during several years.
I'm scientist, and know exactly what and when to do.
As for this disk, I know exactly where the bad sector is located, and
divided disk for two partitions, using bigger one for NTFS and smaller for
FAT. But I'm curios is it possible to get the real advice to solve problem
or everybody give only general advices??

Maxtor and most other hard drive manufactures have utilities you can
download
that will test and map out bad sectors. I've used Maxtors on an 80gig drive
that
wouldn't format, it took about an hour or more but I was able to use it
after.
you'll have to repartition and format afterwards.

This disk in ThinkPad laptop and with a bad sector in FAT partition it works
perfectly. But even if you'll fix it, it will not be a decision as I'll not
know why XP does not format this disk.
In any case, as I do not need encryption, security and other NT options in
this laptop, I'd like to go back to FAT where NT-w2k-XP work faster.

Greetings --
Why post a question if you're going to immediately disqualify the
only correct answer? You need a different hard drive if you want to
use Win2K or WinXP, plain and simple.
By design, neither of these two operating systems are as
"promiscuous" as Win98 when it comes to accepting defective hardware.
This is one of the key reasons they're so much more stable than Win9x.
Computer components acceptable for use with Win9x/Me very often fail
to meet Win2K/WinXP's much more stringent hardware quality
requirements.

OK, then if you know what to do, exactly, and when to do it, exactly,
why are you asking questions, while at the same time criticizing those
who are trying to help?
