for reasons too long to go into I am going to reinstall XP
Home on my computer. I have 2 hard drives. If i renstall
to the C drive will the data/programs on the C drive be
lost while everything on the D drive be preserved? (this
is the result I am looking for).

Hi
Depending on how you re-install XP - if you re-install onto C, then all =
programs/files will be retained on D. The following links will help =
you:
'Repair Install' - should retain all data and programs:
http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
'Clean Install' - will delete everything on that hard drive/partition

You can install it that way, yes. However, if you have any programs on your
D drive (not just data), then you'll need to reinstall them in order to get
them to work. By perfoming a clean install on you C drive, you'll have a
clean Registry with no references to those programs, if any, on your D
drive. The folders will be there, the files will be there, you'll be able
to access them, but programs probably won't run (unless they don't require
installing).
