Hi
I have 2 problems.
1. XP takes a long time to start up and get me to the
login screen. How do I shorten this time?
2. When XP shuts down, it gives me a message
like "application not found" and it shuts down but takes
a long time to shut down.
Any help would be appreciated.

Goto the Control Panel > Admin Tools.
Look at the Event Viewer - the Application and the System log reports.
Look for event reports for your last few boot-ups and shutdown for any
relevant info.
Post again with these extra details for more help.
A Microsoft tool called BootVis was developed to look at system start-ups
and any unnecessary delays.
I'm under the impression that Microsoft no longer supports the use of
BootVis - take a look here
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hwdev/platform/performance/fastboot/default.mspx
However a search on say Google for BootVis download gives plenty of possible
download links.
Good luck.
Martin.
