You are using a combination of Watch Thread and Hide Read Messages. The
watch sign will appear again if
-- you set your view back to show all messages (can be toggled with Hide
at any time)
-- there is a new post in the thread
You've reset the newsgroup (deleted the headers, messages and pointers)
so will need to reassign the Watch Thread preference for it once again.
NOTE: On large volume newsgroups it is possible for threads to eventual
"roll off" (become unavailable). For important posts that you don't want
to lose no matter what your settings are or how old a thread is, create
a new subfolder folder in OE's Personal Folders section. You can drag a
post to this folder or right click on it and choose Copy to Folder. The
copy of the post will remain there until you delete it.

Actually they were MVP's! The quoted text was included in their reply which
is why I knew I wasn't receiving the original post.

My poor explanation. I mean that the orig posted question is not seen at the
top of the thread which in fact starts with the first reply. You in fact can
read the original question if the first responder has not snipped it out.
The missing OP may or may not turn up later on and take its place at the top
of the thread.

Some of us top post, others bottom post and of course some will snip the
original and/or first response. I guess I had better go back and reread the
original post in this case..

Did I forget to mention you should click that button while you're
online? Sorry if I left that out. Also the button can only produce
resutled if you see a number listed in the status bar for "not
downloaded."

Yes, you are interpreting the status bar numbers correctly.
When online and you click on a group in OE, the number of headers that
download is limited by your setting of 999. If there are less than 999
posts, you will not see a (xxx not downloaded). You only see that
notation when there's more than 999 unread messages available (or
whatever your setting is for downloading headers).

In the Folders column on the left of the OE window is a "tree view"
list. It shows the first item as "Outlook Express." Indented under that
is Local Folders (with your personal subfolders inside). Right under
that is where the news servers start getting listed (each group shown
under the originating server).
Is the new server name shown for the MS groups that you read shown as
msnews.microsoft.com? If yes, you are using your ISPs connection to
"talk" directly to the actual MS news server.
If no, then you are accessing the newsgroups via a different server.
Many ISPs offer free access to their own news servers. They "mirror"
messages from other servers that their customers are interested in
reading. The news feed of these mirrored servers is not direct - it's a
trickle effect. Posts appear to the actual MS server and then get
"picked up" by the ISP's servers.

Yes. There is one newsgroup that I read (not an MS newsgroup). Sometimes
I catch up on the group via Google Groups. Other times, I access their
server directly. When I read the group directly, I see posts that never
make it to Google Groups because of the no-archive tag in the post.

Oh, it gets more interesting. Just wait until someone's server "burps"
and you get 10,000 posts from 2001 in your newsreader. Luckily that
doesn't happen very often :)

topics) is at: http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com

Actually I was online and contrary to what I said above(apologies for my
confusion) the status bar updates each time I get 999 more headers. If I do
this repeatedly then I continue to get more headers retrieved from earlier
and earlier dates and the "headers not d/loaded" figure reduces. I'm
guessing that these were headers not initially d/loaded from the server when
I cancelled the "reset" whilst in progress.(?) I swear that the correct
status bar figures were not happening when I last posted eg there was no
indication of headers not d/loaded but anyway it appears to be working now
as you have described.
So at present I have 12,483 "not downloaded". Should I uncheck the 999 and
d/load all the headers or "synchronize" which I gather d/loads headers and
message bodies?.Basically I don't want to lose my "watched conversations".
Also I have cable broadband and tons of disc space so d/load amount or speed
is not an issue. I gatther at the moment I have only d/loaded the headers
and the rest comes only if you click on one and read it? In some ways this
makes sense i.e. why d/load the body of the message until and if you intend
to read it? Before I reset the NG's,some took a long time to access when I
clicked onto the NG and I'm thinking maybe I had too many d/loaded messages
at that time?

I have message rules that mark posts older than 3 days as read. If I
reset a newsgroup, I get the initial xxx amount of posts and then do a
"catch up" to avoid downloading the backlog of headers. Only new
messages download after that.
I save insteresting posts as I find them to folders. Can read those
anytime whether I download the entire group or not.
If you think you'll read 12,483 posts go ahead and download them.
Otherwise, you might want to try out Catch Up too.

You're not a pest. Would rather spend a bit of time getting someone
going in OE (or any newsreader) than to have them continue accessing the
groups with the web interface! Even though there's a bit of a learning
curve, a newsreader is a lot less frustrating in the long run and a more
efficient tool.

I flag all messages that I reply to so that if there is a new response
in that thread, the newsreader marks them to grab my attention. That's

The posts older than 3 days are presumably marked as read on the server so
they don't D/load.Does it matter if you have lots of unread headers on you
hdd?

Do you mean "flag" or "watch". I recently created a newsrule to mark as
watched any post From myself (talk about pushing the envelope :o) )

I let them download so that I have the headers (just in case I want to
check back in a thread for more history).

Both. In OE, I use a rule to mark posts I've made in a certain color so
I don't think you're pushing the envelope at all. ;) I also have colors
set for folks that I enjoy reading posts from on a regular basis. I use
the color codes in conjunction with an add-on called "OE Tools" (link to
download at the insideoe site mentioned before). It adds toolbar button
that causes OE to show only threads that I have participated in.
In Agent (I bounce back and forth between OE and Agent - like them both
for different reasons), I use the "Watch Thread" rule to highlight
threads I'm interested in or that may need follow up.
