It looks as though the old items in the system tray notifications are
accumulating. Specifically: r-click on the taskbar | properties | taskbar |
Customize. Now you see a list of "Current Items". But I see many items that
are old, old, old. Like items that were uninstalled ages ago. Is there a way
to reset this list, or at least remove the antiquated items?

See "How to Clear Past Items from the Notification Area"
