Freeware

Recently I downloaded freeware (CamStudio) that captures
cam screens and creates video. It is 'free' but requires
registration within 14 days.

Can someone advise what the catch may be? In general is
freeware safe? Is there anything I should be alert to?

Any guidance is appreciated.

Spybot and Adware on a daily basis.
