View Full Version : No encryption in XP? Only Windows 2000?

I know Windows 2000 allows it, but is there any way to encrypt files in XP?
If not, is there any cheap way to do this in XP?
I am using the Entropy search engine and there are two directories I do not
want indexed. The help file to Entropy says to "encrypt the directories."
Making them hidden or using the underscore does not work.

Hi Josh,
Yes, WinXP has EFS (Pro version only, and you must be using NTFS).

Oops. Sorry. I had searched IE and OE help. I did not search the main help
from my desktop. I found it.

Thanks alot. I have the Pro version and did a search for "encryption" in the
help file. Found nothing. I will try to search for EFS instead. What does
EFS stand for?

Hi
I would *strongly* advise you to not use encryption to solve this problem. Even
if you follow instructions (exporting private encryption keys to a external
storage medium, creating a recovery agent etc.) you are at a greater risk to
loose those encrypted files if something goes wrong with your OS
installation/user profile. Don't use encryption unless you really, really,
really need it.
If the Entropy search engine indexing can be enabled/disabled for individual
disk partitions (different drive letters), I would have created a new
partition and moved the files over to it instead
