recent documents on start menu not updating

at some point my "Recent Documents" under the start menu
quit working. It had several items listed but they were
very old and recent documents aren't showing up any
more. I have tried to remove the "Recent Documents"
setting and restore it but that didn't seem to make any
difference.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get this
working again?
