Mystery Dialups

I'm new to XP, and occasionally my Home Windows XP will
attempt to connect to the internet without my initiating
a connection. This never happened under Windows 98 SE.

I have not enabled automatic Windows Update, and so far as I
know AVG updating is also not enabled.

I'm baffled why my machine tries to dial. It also makes me
nervous.

Any suggestions?
