View Full Version : Windows Update Advice needed

Haven't done any Updates yet. XP Home Version 2002 Service Pack 1. I was
told to look for Service Pack 1a and download that first and then check for
any further critical updates. Can't see Service Pack 1a in list. I have
spotted an Update Roll-up 1 should I install that first and then recheck?
There was also a recomended update 814995 for Windows XP wondered if I
should download that. Perhaps that would sort out my Autorun intermittent
problem.
Also there was a driver download, would this be relevant or should I leave
well alone!!
ENE TECHNOLOGY INC. pcmcia software update released on December 12 2003
Thanks for any help. I disillusioned XP user. I love my W98SE desktop.

If you have SP1 no need for 1a. Do the rollup, NEVER get drivers from the
update site, go to the manufacturer's site instead. Hang in there, there IS
a learning curve.

WinXP is full of bugs. Almost all (?98%) of SP1 (or SP1a) is a collection
of fixes, 324 of them -- most of them probably are not relevant to your use
of the computer, but the figure gives you a clue to the scale of the
deficit. WinXP without SP1 is incomplete.

If the manufacturer of your car issues a recall notice because of a safety
fault just discovered, not to send the car back immediately for repair is
sheer lunacy. Now you said you had not done any updates at all...!
Even if you don't care less that the hackers may steal and use your personal
details, don't forget your open computer can be deployed as a node (a base)
for perpetrating their nefarious deeds. That is why with the helping hand
of open computers like yours virii spread expotentially.

I have always done Updates on my W98SE and had no problems. I seem to have
not a very smooth ride with XP since having my new laptop and don't want to
make things any worse. Before you say I couldn't make them worse, there
quite a few emails in these Newsgroups from people having downloaded the
Updates and find they now have no sound etc. I don't want to add that
problem to my Autorun problems. Just being cautious as to what I can
download safely! It has made me quite nervous about this OS. Are you saying
you have had NO problems with any of the updates then?

Of course I have problems with updates, like 810847. Whether one should
download-and-install an update the moment it is posted is a different issue.
MS would like us to take the updates immediately automatically; see the
scheduled download-and-update on the Automatic Update page, but then it
would be rights violation, so it is put out as one option among others. At
the height of the Blaster worm 'pandemic', I recall one MS did mention this
preferred action and bemoaned it was not taken up universally.

In your opinion then do you think I would be 'safe from any problems' if I
just downloaded the Critical Updates and left the ohter updates alone. I am
taking the advice given about not downloading any Drivers it suggests. I
remember with my Desktop I once downloaded an update it suggested for
DirectX ( which couldn't be un-installed) I said never again!!

I have been stung by installing various updates, and, like you, any updating
has become a tense, worrisome exercise. That was not until I discovered the
freeware DrvImagerXP. As some of the updates once installed cannot be
uninstalled, e.g. the DirectX patch you mentiond, and, sometimes even a
system restore fails to put the computer back on track, this utility is, for
me, truly a godsend. An image of my system is saved to a separate partition
before any update -- for that matter, any manipulation -- and if that goes
pearshaped, the saved image is restored back to the working (now wonky)
partition. It takes only 12min.(the pre-update saving also takes 12min.).
You may like to investigate:
http://www.softpedia.com/public/cat/13/2/13-2-39.shtml
After SP1a (from a CD), I took *all* (currently 17, by all account) the
critical/security updates, in the order, sequence, as listed in the scan
(i.e.download-and-install after switching on the built-in Internet
Connection Firewall). I also downloaded-and-installed a few Windows
(i.e.'recommended') Updates (for example, .NET Framework, for DrvImagerXP,
Windows Media Player series 9, and its associated updates...etc.) but I left
the Drivers alone.
I did not encountered one single issue in my last WinXP clean install and
updating. Further updating including the latest: MS04-003 (Jan14) and
MS04-004 (Feb02) was also uneventful. I believe the trouble you mentioned
referred to MS04-004 (read also the malfunctions it caused to some folks in
the recent posts on KB832894 in the windowsupdate newsgroup).
There is no quarantee that it's going to be troublefree. But you should do
all the things recommended before embarking on any manipulation of the
system; that is what updates are. By the way, this may prove useful:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/update.htm
Good luck.

Thanks Maurice, I am sure I haven't disabled anything, well not
intentionally. I have only had laptop since 9th Jan and up to now its not
always been a pleasure!! I do have Zone Alarm installed and AVG Avti Virus
which is updated as often as they produce the updates, I check daily. I have
looked at the article you suggested on 814995 and as with a lot of these
articles I am afraid 'they go above my head'. I'll probably leave that one
then!!
I have checked Dougs article and mys Shell Hardware Detection is started and
automatic.
I have been on the Fuji website and I am trying to sort out whether I ought
to get an updated driver. Been looking on my system but couldn't see where
my drivers were to check which one I have to see if there is an updated one.
I just can't get my head around why it is intermittent. I could understand
it always not working but to work sometimes when I start laptop and not
others doesn't make sense to me.

Just a thought There is a version of powertoys available
Specifically for XP If you D/L them and select and install Tweak UI there's
a facility in there for enabling Autoplay
This may do what you want
Hopefully anyway
It's a fairly small small D/L

Hi Maurice
Fuji is my camera which is having the same problem as CDs etc. The autorun
doesn't always start. When I plug my camera into the USB port it should
start up Finepix software and then I can download the pics. Sometimes it
doesn't sometimes it does!! I know that if the camera doesn't work if I go
and put a music CD in the CD drive then I can guarantee that wont autorun
neither. If one starts the other starts and vice versa. Yet one is a 'drive'
and the other is a USB port. I suppose they are both 'devices' though.

Scrolling 1/6 down the SP1 list of fixes:
Q319632 Device Manager Hangs After You Remove a USB Camera Multimedia
Also, there is a driver library on the web:
http://www.driverguide.com/
Maybe SP1 is all you want. It is worth a try.
