If I go to a date when I downloaded some software will it restore that
software on my laptop. Because I thought I neede to go 'backwards' because
of a problem it took me to a date prior to the software I downloaded. Now I
know that software didn't give me the problem I was wondering if I could go
forward to a later Restore date after that software had been downloaded and
find the prog was still there. It would save me having to download again as
it took over an hour.

Hi Lynn,

Sorry, you can only go backwards. You will need to redownload it if the
setup file is no longer on the system.

Oh right, I thought that being as I had gone backwards and my settings were
now at a previous date, I would be able to pick another date in my
'calendar' which is hsowing but it is actually yesterdays date when I
downloaded Nero. If that makes sense to you:-)

Lynn:
Rick's advice is "spot-on". Does the Nero (downloaded) setup file =
still exist on your HD or not? (Hopefully you wrote down or remember =
where you saved it).

Reason I'm responding: Want to make you and others aware that System =
Restore is not a "global save & refetch" all my stuff (type of thing).
System Restore from XP covers key "XP system files" and registry hives.
Please do not count on it as a "general backup". At minimum, make use =
of XP's built-in Backup utility on a regular basis.

Hi Maurice
It loaded on my desktop and I installed it from there, of course when I
restored my system to an earlier date it had gone. What I can't get my head
around is that if I go to System Restore now, the date 7th Feb is
highlighted and I had Nero on my system then. I have noticed that when I
went back to times earlier progs I hadn't installed then weren't there so I
(obviously mistakenly) thought it would also work in reverse because I
reckoned it must have stored them somewhere. When I reinstalled Finepix it
asked if I wanted to use the same default as I had on the earlier version,
where did it know that from?

Lynn, there are files that are not monitored by SR. See: Monitored File =
Extensions =
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=3D/library/enus/sr/sr/a=
bout_system_restore.asp. =20

You could try restoring to 2/7/04 to see if the download returns, it =
might IF the RP was created after the download of Nero. There is an =
option in SR to undo the restoration, so it may work. If it doesn't =
then you will need to follow Rick's advice as seconded by Maurice.

Finepix probably has information stored in the folder that you are =
saving its output to which is why previous settings could be restored.

While both Rick and Maurice have given you the best advice you should be
advised that you can go forward again after you've run System Restore and
reverted to a previous date. System Restore has an "Undo my last restore
operation" command. So if you revert back to a date a week ago and find it
unhelpful you can "Undo" that action and go back to today's date. You can
then pick another restore point from say 3 days ago.

System Restore monitors executables and system files. But files stored in
the My Documents folder (and it's sub directories) are not monitored and
therefore are "protected" from System Restore . While many files like .doc,
..txt, .eml .dbx etc are not affected by System Restore no matter where they
are located on the drive other files are. Of concern to many people are .exe
and .mp3 files. If these files are downloaded into the My Documents
directory they are safe from System Restore but if you create a folder
outside of My Documents you run the risk of "losing" these files if you run
System Restore to revert to a date prior to the date when you saved the
files. It is best to create a directory within My Documents to save
downloaded files into.
