View Full Version : dv capture

i link my sony trv-9e to ieee1394 port of my computer
with windows xp and try to capture dv with movie maker 2
or mgi video wave 4, but it fails. device manager shows
both sony camcorder and 1394, and when i use movie maker
or video wave, both softwares can control my dv, but
nothing's shown in the view pane. when i capture in dv-
avi format, it prompts that "no response with dv device,
pls check whether device is connected and opened". i've
tried 2 different 1394 ports with 2 different cables, and
have uninstall and re-install the nec 1394 driver, but it
doesn't help. anyone can help?
thanks.

when you connect your camera to the firewire card does xp give you a pop up
about the new hardware being recognised?

are you setting the camera to video recorder mode?

is your camera dv input and output enabled, i know the uk versions of the
trv9 are not by default (needs modifying), my hong kong PAL trv9 has both
enabled. The computer is maybe having problems talking to the camera because
the input into the camera is not enabled.

The reason you are seing the camera on your device manager list is because
the camera is talking to the computer because DV output is enabled.

I am not sure but I believe you can buy a "dongle" for it. might taking some
finding as the camera is about 5 years old now. most DV cameras sold now are
input/output enabled, if not don't buy it.

A local independent repair place might be willing to have a go at a
conversion, not sure what it entails, but the warranty is already up anyway
so it will not affect warranty.

That is where I bought mine, should be DV In/Out enabled as standard.

not exactly sure what the solution is I'm afraid.

Have you tried connecting another DV camera to your computer?

hey, i finally solve my dv capture problem and may share
with those with the same problem. i have to turn on my
sony camcorder before turning on the computer. with this
order movie softwares can capture dv input, otherwise
can't. it appears very weird that if i turn on the
computer first and then the camcorder, dv can't be
captured, with the camcorder's still on and reboot the
computer, it doesn't work too. the only success order is
to turn off the computer, switch on the camcorder, and
then turn on the computer again. any one know the reason?

Are you plugging the firewire cable into the camera with the computer on? I
am surprised that XP does not recognise the new hardware when you then
switch the camera on after plugging it in.

I have no problem with my TRV9E camera bought in HK, plugging the firewire
cable into the camera and then turning the camera on, with the computer
running XP.

It shouild be enabled by default, unless you are in Europe and then you'll
find that DV Out is enabled, but not DV-In.
