View Full Version : Video Editing -- What Am I Missing?

I have a system built around an Asus P4PE motherboard. It has a
Firewire connector and also has an attachment that provides jacks for
S-VID and COMP (in and out).

On the other hand, I have an analog VCR with lots of videotapes that I
would like to get into that computer somehow. But how?

When I bought the P4PE, I thought I would be all set to import video.
Evidently not. It seems I am missing a piece of hardware that will
allow me to take the cable or phono output from the VCR and translate
it to one of these inputs on the P4PE.

The P4PE also has Ethernet and USB 2.0 connections. I heard that USB
was slow.

Any advice on what device would work best to enable me to explore
this? I don't want to spend much time or money screwing around with
it, naturally.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Do you have the analog capture drivers installed?

I don't know if I have the analog capture drivers installed. I set up
the machine nearly a year ago, got frustrated, and gave up. Where can
I look to find out?

You're going to have to give me a bit of help here.... I can find the board
http://usa.asus.com/products/mb/socket478/p4pe/overview.htm

But I don't see anything about adapters/cables for analog capture. What do
they attach to? I can see the firewire onboard.... but that's for digital
capture. Different thing altogether.

Do these adapters/cables perhaps go into a graphics card? If so, it's
probably ATI or nVidia....

Right click on My Computer and select Properties... Look in the Hardware tab
and click on Device Manager.... under Display Adapter, what does it say you
have?

Well, having spent a half-hour trying to answer your question, I
realized there is no answer. The external module I'm talking about
came with (ta-da!) the *video card* not the motherboard. I did
mention the right motherboard, but that's not the issue.

In other words, *here* is the webpage I should have pointed you
toward:
http://usa.asus.com/products/vga/v9180vs/overview.htm

Page 7 of the manual under that webpage says that my video card, the
Asus V9180 VS (Video Suite), comes with S-VHS and composite TV out and
video in. Page 9 shows, poorly, the basic idea; there's a cable that
plugs into the video card and leads to this "Multimedia" module with
S-Vid and Comp in and out jacks.

So I have S-video and composite in and out jacks. The missing piece
is the connection between there and the VCR.
