XP has a rudimentary back-up program but it is not loaded by
default. It doesn't directly work to a CD-R.
Corel can open some files created by WORKS and most WORD
files. Copy your floppies to a folder on your hard drive
(make the folder inside MY Documents, name it "Works data
files" or something like that) and then try to open the
files, if Corel recognizes the file type they will open.
Go to the Corel website and check for plug-ins to work with
WORKS.

Read your computer documentation, probably a hidden
partition is on the hard drive to do a system restore. But
it will probably wipe all data and programs not installed at
the factory.
Check with the manufacturer about getting CDs, including a
genuine XP CD.

WORKS use .wps for word processing, other extensions for
database and spreadsheet. WORKS SUITEs include MS WORD,
which is least expensive way to get a legal WORD.

| Works and Word are compatible but Granny Jen has
WordPerfect, not

If you floppies were made with a back-up program they are
probably encoded by that program. Simply copying the files
does not decode the file. You need the same program to
unlock the files. If you used W98's back-up to create the
files, find a friend with W98 and restore those back-ups to
a folder on their computer, that will remove the back-up
coding. Then copy the files to floppies or better, a CD-R,
they will all probably fit one CD (1 CD= 450 floppies).

If your friend has either WORKS or WORD, open the files and
convert them to a Corel compatible format or better still,
the generally universal .rtf format, then any program can
read them.

Salesmen sell you a computer and talk about the speed and
features, but they rarely talk about software compatibility
issues because they don't know and if they did it would
queer the deal.
