Printer software will not install, printer will print

Got a new computer with windows XP. Printer - hp psc750xi-
could not be installed as software not for XP. Purchased
HP Photosmart Printers Software v. 3.4.13, but it will not
install. Can print pages from computer and can scan to it,
but installations says it is not connected, even though I
got the "new hardware found". I did not connect printer
until told to; have deleted printer, software, and driver,
rebooted, turned off anti-virus, and tried again - many
times. Always get same message. Would appreciate help.
