I am thinking of buying Windows XP but I understand you
can only load it once (or maybe twice). What happens if
your computer crashes and you need to re-install it a
third time? Do you have to buy a new copy of Windows XP?

No, this is not true. You can reinstall as much as you need to, but on one
computer at a time. If you buy the OEM version, it can be used only on the
computer that it is first installed on.

You mis-understand.
You can only install it one computer at a time, but you may install it as
many time as you want on that one computer. If it is a retail version, you
can move it to another computer if you first delete it from the first one it
was installed on. If it is the OEM version, you can install it as many time
as you want also, but it can not be moved to another machine under any
circumstances.

I've re-installed mine....Well more times than I can remember. I don't think
it's a problem. Go for it!
