word processing

Have just purchased a new sony laptop with pre installed
XP home and do not like the works wp prog. I would prefer
to use word. Can I transfer the word (part of windows 98)
prog from old laptop , or is there an easier way to add
this prog into the XP? I also cannot edit/read word files
backed upto disk from my old laptop. It reappears as
Notepad which is totally useless. Any ideas?

Yes if you have the original install disk for Word. Pop the CD in and follow
the instructions.
