power issue

My system won't enter or remain in screen saver or power down mode because
something is briefly reading from the hard drive or memory (?) from time to
time. I have made all of the correct settings in power mgt. and Display.

Please advise.

This could be any number of applications taking the OS out of standby to perform updates. If you have Dial-up there is also an option in the modem configuration to "allow this modem to take the system out of standby" or something similiar. Sorry but there
isn't just a simple "change this setting" suggestion. Turn off all auto updates in every program that has that option and be sure that "awake from standby" options are unchecked.
