virtual machine java

when i visit some websites i get a popup screen that tells
me that i need a new java virtual machine to get the info.
I have pressed to download and it appears that it has
downloaded. I dont know what im doing wrong becuase i
thinkk that i have accesed this and set it up but it never
seems to work for me. Can nayone help me please. Thansk Ray
