after my old printer died, it appears to be working fine and prints its test
pages fine and when i connect it to my laptop it auto detects the parallel
connection as the input source and laptop was able to detect it after i
installed it manualy but when i print a test page it comes out as pages of
garbage charecters

Did you leave the printer disconnected from the computer when you installed
the driver? If you didn't you'll have to uninstall driver, disconnect
printer, reinstall driver and reconnect printer after driver is installed.
You should be prompted when to connect printer after install from wizard.
