when i placed a dvd in the drive i got a message box
asking me what did want to do. the only "paly" solution
was media player, but i want to use another program. Now,
when I put the dvd in the drive, windows explorer opens to
the folders on the dvd, but doesn't start the dvd player.
how can i fix this so the dvd starts in my preferred
player?

first. get rid of auto run for that drive. I hate that. Can't reall
remember where it's at in the registry. I think its hkey_ local_ machine_
system_ currentcontrolset_ services_ cdrom "Autorun" = dword 0x00000000.

in Pro go to start run. type gpedit.msc. go to computer figuration,
administrative templates, System and find the item "Turn off autoplay".
check the box . close. Then you can use whatever software you want. To set
as default, go to control panel, folder options, file types and set whatever
to always open DVD type extensions.
