View Full Version : Scanner problem

Hi there,
I have a HP Scanjet 5100C installed on Windows XP pc via parallel cable.
I'm using the the built in XP scanning wizard, and not the HP scanning
software that was supplied.
The problem I am having is that for a while (usually about two weeks) the
scanner works fine, then I start to get multi-coloured distorted images.
When the scanner is re-installed, XP finds it as a 'new scsi card' and
doesn't recognise it as a scanner at all. To make matters worse, the HP
scanning software throws my machine into a loop whereby it boots up and
then shuts down, so I have to get in and remove the software vis safe mode!
Has anybody had similar problems.
Thanks in advance.

I can't speak authoritavely on this but my two cents:
XP doesn't care much for parallel port scanners. I see more people
who have problems with them than who don't. They always seem to need
uninstalling/reinstalling.
A new USB scanner is probably cheaper, and will almost certainly have
better resolution than your old HP. It will also give you much less
headaches.

SCSI (Small Computer System Interface) is a parallel form of
data transfer. So it's normal for XP to identify that scanner as
a SCSI peripheral.
Even at ECP mode, transferring images over a parallel port isn't
worth the effort. For $60 you can get a USB "High Speed" unit
and move from 1-Meg per second to 480-Megs per second.

I have an HP5200c connected to my new Xp computer but it's connected
with a USB cable. I downloaded the latest XP drivers for it from the HP
site. It's been working perfectly since I set it up.
