When I try to run a game (I've run this game before with no problems) I get
a DirectX 6.0 error: "This program requires at least 3 megabyte of virual
memory to run."

I do have DirectX 9.0b installed so I do not understand why all of the
sudden I am getting this error.

No, I've not installed anything recently that uses DirectX.

Go to the manufacture's web site and look for an updated driver for your graphics
card.

Its nothing to do with DirectX, its the virtual memory settings are
wrong.
See System Control Panel, click on Advanced, Performance Settings,
Advanced and make sure you have enough virtual memory set up
e.g. <memory> X 1.5 e.g. 128MB real mem = 172MB virtual ram.
