Cpu Heat

Hello, I just installed XP and now my computer is running
hotter. It was running idle with 98se at 37c and now at
56c with XP. Any suggestions as to why?

What CPU do you have? If it is too slow to meet XP's requirements, it is
overworking.

Your CPU and heatsink are up to the job, provided the fan is clean and the
heatsink has not lost contact with the CPU. If all you did was upgrade from
one OS to the other and the inside of the box is clean, look at the software
you are running. Some games are high demand on the CPU, it is just working
and "getting a sweat" going.

Try this: Shut down your PC for awhile, maybe overnight. Start the PC and
don't run any high demand App's. Check your e-mail and surf the net,
etc.awhile and then after an hour or so, re-boot and go to BIOS and see what
the temperature is. After that period of low demand, compare it with the
temp. when running other applications.

Under load, most CPU's aren't in trouble until they reach 80°C or more. If
you're running 56° with low demand, there is a problem. Post back.

As JAX stated, your fan and heatsink should be OK. I am also running a AMD
2000 with a Thermaltake sink/fan unit (don't remember the model #, it has a
all copper heat sink). My CPU temp is 38 C at this time, and rarely gets
over 40, even with heavy graphics use. Make sure that all fans are running
and clean, and that the air intake and exits on the case are not dirty or
blocked. Be sure that the heat sink is seated properly on the CPU, and that
a thermal pad or paste is used. The heat sink could be installed 180 degrees
from the proper position, which would not let it contact the CPU properly.

I thought of a major compound question in determining what to suggest. Did
you only change the OS or did you open and do something inside the box, what
kind of time elapsed between the temperature change, what prompted you to
check the temperature, was there a problem????

The compound question saved me the effort of closing one question at a time,
just lazy that way!

I only changed the OS. All fans are clean.

Sry, didnt answer all your questions in your last post. Like I stated, I changed the OS and the change in heat only took 3-4 minutes upon boot up. I have downloaded updated for the PC Alert software. Now PC Alert also monitors my voltages..Vcore, 3.3 V, +5
V and +12V. There was one change in these which was the +12V. When running under 98se it was @ 12.00 and under XP it fluxuates between 12.35 and 12.42. The reason I check temps is because of gaming. I am getting temp readings now (idle) that were the temp
s under extreme gaming under 98se.

Have you checked the temperature by way of the BIOS? I am not familiar with
PC Alert, perhaps it is reporting inaccurately.

Good point, JAX. The software he is using may not work correctly under XP.
Also the OP could go to www.aida32.hu and download AIDA32, the Enterprise
version. It will display temps in addition to much more system data.
