I will be updating from Windows 98 SE to XP soon, and had
a question regarding the update.
When I update, will all my files be lost? Will only
certain files be lost? Will I have to reinstall every
application (from ms word to AOL)? What kinda applications
don't work on XP?
Thanks in advance for all your help.
Simon.

Hello Simon
There shouldn't be any major troubles doing an upgrade and you should regain
all your files and settings, but as always it is a good idea to backup all
important information before doing this or any major change. Make sure to
disconnect all hardware except your monitor, Keyboard, and mouse before
install.

If you are updgrading, use the file and transfer wizard. Make sure you indicate a safe place for XP to do the transfer. You will get back all your files and settings only. You will have to reinstall all your programs. Be prepared, some will work just f
ine, others won't. Just in case. Anything you really don't want to lose or have corrupted, back up with a really good backup program you've used before. Also, read all the other posts about what the first things you should do when installing XP for the
first time, particularly installing the critical updates. I found it helpful to really clean up my pc and get rid of all the old files and program before doing the upgrade. Since you will have to install all your programs anyway, give a clean install som
e thought.

Download and run the Windows XP Upgrade Advisor. Search the Microsoft
website for it, sorry I don't have a direct link.
