Hi all

On occasions I wish to print contents of windows or the screen. I follow
what I understand to be the process (Alt print screen, open say notepad,
edit , paste) except that paste is greyed out. Can any one help.

Matt,
It's an image you're making, so use a graphic rather than a text program.
MS Paint will work.

Hi and thanks all

Both paint and word provided the solution.

Use a picture editing software. I am using Paint Shop myself.
After you press Print Screen you can paste the image into the Picture
Editing Software.

The PrintScreen key doesn't actually *print* anymore (not in
Windows, anyway): it copies a snapshot of the desktop to the
clipboard. You can then paste it into a blank document in your image
manipulation program of choice (and of course print it from there).

Pressing Alt+PrintScreen instead snapshots only the active window.

As for making snapshots of videos, it depends on the player you're
using and its configuration, so there's no one-size-fits-all answer.
It's not rocket surgery, though.

If the "PrintScreen" snapshot has a "hole" where the still frame
should be (you might even be seeing the "real" video playing through
that "hole", don't let that confuse you), rummage through the
player's configuration to turn off the video overlay (could also be
called something else, like hardware or video acceleration or
something) and try again.

Some video players also have their own snapshot features.

Here's more or less the same information in more words:

Hope that helped.

Greetings --

Pressing the <PrtScn> key copies the entire display to the
clipboard. Pressing <ALT>+<PrtScn> copies only the active Window to
the clipboard (iow, into RAM). To view the screen capture, open a
graphics program, such as MS Paint, and press <CTRL>+V. This will
paste the contents of the clipboard (your screenshot) into the open
file, and allow you to view it or save it as a file for later use.
