View Full Version : Login box? Modem problem

My son has just rung me, he lives in another part of the country so I
can't just pop round and have a look. He has yesterday upgraded from
Windows ME to XP Home.

He has a two problems which he has described to me over the phone.

1. As windows is loading up, just as it shuts the splash screen with
the loading dots on a login box comes up, very fast - he says it looks
like an old ME login - its only on briefly so he can't give a full and
accurate rendition of it, but it looks like an administrator login and
a user name, but no password space. There is an 'OK' button. If he
does not rapidly click this then windows goes back into loading up
again. If he clicks 'OK' it loads fine - but he has to be very fast to
catch it.

2. His adsl modem is windows XP compatible, but in the install of XP
it checked his hardware and said it wasn't. When he had finished the
install it wouldn't work. He then uninstalled the modem and has
reinstalled it - now it hangs the computer whenever he tries to use
it.

Any thoughts welcomed, its tricky being 300 miles away form the
problem and he can't access the internet to find out things for
himself until the modem is working!

Cheers

Roger

Sometimes the modem is fine but the software for it is not. If there was
software provided for the modem above and beyond the drivers, it should be
uninstalled. If an XP version is available, he can install it if he wants -
after the modem and drivers are in and working.

More importantly, suggest that he checks the modem manufacturer's website
for updated XP drivers.

Start | Control Panel | Performance and Maintenance | System | Advanced

Click Settings in the Startup and Recovery section and uncheck
"Automatically restart". Windows will then display the blue screen. We
need the information from that screen.
