USB 2.0 - Speed

I just ran a complete backup (and verification ) of my entire system. It
'seemed' to run much slower than I expected. I use a notebook with a
docking station - and the docking station has a Belkin USB card in it which
is supposed to make my external hard drives USB 2.0 compatible. I also have
Windows XP SP-1 installed. Is there a way to determine the transfer speed
of my USB connections to assure me that they are working at USB 2.0 speed?

Have you tried simply transferring a file of a known size and timing the
transfer? Use something about 100 MB or so in size.

The USB card will NOT magically change a USB 1.2 external hard drive
into a USB 2.0 hard drive.

I'll guess that your notebook has a USB 1.x port on it somewhere?

If you plug a USB 2.0 external hard drive into a USB 1.2 port, it will
operate at USB 1.2 speed - 12 Mbits/s. If you plug the same 2.0 drive
into the 2.0 port on the docking station, it will operate at 480 Mbits/s
(or there abouts - 480 is the theoritical maximum.)

Thanks - but I installed a Belkin USB 2.0 card with drivers in my docking
station - and it was working much faster than it did before. My powered
Belkin USB expansion ports are also 2.0 compatible.
